Usually, children start to learn numbers by counting on their fingers. However, it becomes very challenging to comprehend the numeric relationships for numbers that are bigger than 10, due to the lack of tangible countable objects. Abacus helps children to easily grasp multi-digit numeric relationships by presenting the numbers and their relationships as concrete beads instead of regular abstract arithmetic processes.
Using abacus can also help younger kids to easily comprehend concepts of mathematics, such as value of numbers, decimal system, digit positions and so on. Once children understand numbers, they will probably become interested in mathematics.
Numerous studies have shown that majority of the human brain development takes place till the age of 13 years. Constant practicing on an abacus stimulates the growth of brain cells to sharpen the mental formation for a child and enhances the coordination between eyes, ears and hands through multisensory teaching.
The optimum time to learn the abacus and mental arithmetic – as well as most other things - is from the tender age of 5. Children at this age have good control over their motor sensory skills and like to experiment and manipulate objects. Their ability to reason logically, curiosity and possession of a hungry appetite for acquiring new skills explains why they are able to absorb knowledge like a sponge absorbs water.
